Our pool is 1.2 meters deep in the shallow end, which means you will always be able to stand comfortably. While we may venture into the deeper areas of the pool as swimmers grow in confidence and ability, you are more than welcome to remain in the shallow water if that’s where you feel most at ease.
Children will not be able to touch the bottom of the pool, but rest assured that our sessions are carefully designed with safety and support in mind.
For first-time or nervous adult swimmers, we want you to feel reassured:
- You will always be able to stand in our pool.
- Our sessions take place in a quiet and peaceful environment, with no other classes running at the same time.
- We always focus on helping you and your baby feel comfortable and confident in the water.
You will never be asked to do anything you’re not comfortable with. Our instructors offer clear explanations, provide alternatives, and follow a child-led and parent-led teaching approach—because your confidence and comfort come first.
Many people believe they need to wait until their baby has had their first vaccinations before heading to the pool—but this is actually a common myth.
According to official NHS guidance: official NHS guidance
“You can take your baby swimming at any age, both before and after they have been vaccinated. It does not matter if they have not yet completed their course of vaccinations.”
In the first 6 weeks, most families are focused on resting, recovering from birth, and adjusting to new routines—so it’s perfectly normal if you’re not ready for a swim just yet. But when the time feels right, you can start building water confidence even before visiting the pool.
Gentle splashes at bath time are a great way to help your baby become familiar with water from the comfort of home. When you’re ready, we’ll be here to welcome you both to the pool in a safe, calm, and supportive environment.
Yes, water temperature is very important—especially for babies.
Unlike many other pools, we heat both the water and the surrounding air, so when you and your little one get out of the pool, you won’t experience that sudden chill!
The Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA) recommends that baby swimming takes place in water heated to over 30°C. Our pool is kept at a comfortable 32°C, making it ideal for young swimmers and ensuring a warm, relaxing experience for both baby and parent.
One of the special parts of your baby’s first swimming journey with us is sharing it with others—whether that’s mum, dad, grandparents, or another caregiver. Everyone is welcome at Little Fishes!
We’re often asked, “Will there be other dads in the class?”
The answer is: absolutely, yes!
Our classes include a lovely mix of caregivers, and we regularly see dads joining in and loving the experience. Swimming together creates special moments of bonding through close holds, gentle movements, and shared confidence-building—memories that truly last a lifetime.

It’s completely normal for some children to feel nervous about their first swim. The good news is there are plenty of gentle ways to help build their confidence—even before you get to the pool!
Here are some tips to help ease their worries and make swimming something to look forward to:
- 🗣 Talk about swimming at home—watch videos, look at photos, or share fun swimming memories
- 🎒 Let them help pack their swim bag so they feel involved and in control
- 🧜♂️ Choose a favourite towel or swimsuit with a fun design or character they love
- Bring familiar items from home, like their bath toys, comforter
- 👙 Try on swimwear at home so they get used to how it feels before getting into the pool
- 🕒 Arrive early—take your time exploring the changing rooms and waiting area together so they feel at ease
Most importantly, bring your patience and time. Children feel more secure when they’re not rushed. A calm, supportive approach helps build trust, and with time, their confidence will grow.
Yes—if your child is under 4 years old, a swim nappy is essential.
To help keep our pool clean, safe, and hygienic for everyone, we have a strict “happy nappy” policy in place for all children under 4 years of age.
Here’s what your child should wear:
- If not potty trained:
- A disposable or reusable swim nappy as the first layer
- A snug-fitting neoprene nappy cover (also called a happy nappy) as the second layer
- 🚽 If potty trained (but under 4):
- Just the neoprene over shorts (like Splash Shorts or Jammers)
These layers help prevent leaks and ensure a clean, safe swimming environment for all.
If you have forgotten either layer please ask at reception we always have spares for you to use.
Good news — you don’t need to bring any floatation aids or equipment with you! We provide everything your child needs during their lesson.
Here’s what we use in our classes:
👶 Baby & Toddler Classes:
We use pool noodles (also known as woggles) and catamarans along with our specific holds for babies and guided movements.
🚀 Little Fishes swim sessions:
In these classes, we introduce a variety of swim aids AquaPlanes & Swim Fins—lightweight, comfy back floats that we affectionately call “rocket packs” or “Sharks”
They give just the right level of support and confidence for early independent swimming.
✅ All equipment is provided in class, so you only need to bring the essentials listed in your “What to Bring” checklist.
If you’re ever unsure, feel free to ask—we’re always happy to help!
